How Do I Get Set Up For Instagram Live? (Guest & Host)

11/13/2020

Instagram Live is a great tool for growing your audience. But if you don't set yourself up properly, you and your viewers could have a frustrating experience. Here are a few tips to help you have the best IG Live experience.

How Do I Join IG Live?

IG Live only works on cellphones unless you use another app which can get complicated, so I suggest sticking to your cellphone. There are 2 ways to join an IG Live. You can go to your home screen in IG and look at the top of the screen. If anyone that you follow is live, click on their icon at the top of the home screen and you're in.

Or you can go directly to someone's account and then click on their icon in the top left corner to join their IG Live. Once you're in, you can leave comments in the chat box, ask questions with the question button or show love with the heart button.

How Do I Host My Own IG Live?
  1. Go to your home screen or your profile and tap on your icon. If your stories open up, click on your icon in the top left corner.
  2. At the bottom of the screen you'll see "Live", "Story" and "Reels". Tap "Live".
  3. Tap the 4 bars on the left side of the screen to add a title for your IG Live. People will see that title when you go live.
  4. Tap the white button at the bottom of the screen when you're ready to start.

If you want to invite someone on screen with you (I highly recommend this! It's a lot of fun.) look at the list of viewers after you've started your IG Live and tap on someone's name to send them a request to join you. If they accept, they'll magically be on screen with you! Viewers can also request to join you. If this happens, you'll get a notification during your IG Live. If you accept, they'll join you on screen.

Getting Set Up For IG Live:
  1. Before you start an IG Live, make sure that your phone is on "Do Not Disturb". If you receive a phone call during an IG Live, you will get disconnected and you'll have to start/join all over again.
  2. If you're the host or a guest close all of the other apps on your phone before you start. You want all of your phone's power focused on Instagram when you go live.
  3. Make sure you're in a place with strong wifi. If the wifi is bad, your viewers will probably experience glitchy playback and freezing during your IG Live. And they probably won't tune in for long.
  4. Make sure your phone is plugged in or fully charged. IG Live require a lot of battery power. You don't want your batter to die during your IG Live. (That happened to me once!)
  5. Use the most current phone that you have access to. Older phones aren't as well equipped for video streaming and often have better wifi connections.
  6. Finally, for our interview, set your phone up so that no one has to hold it during your interview and make sure you're well lit. You'll get a much better image.

What Are Tags/Mentions And How Do I Do It?

Tags and mentions are a way to engage with people on Instagram. They're not the same as hashtags.

A tag is usually used when someone (or their product) is in the picture/video that you're posting. But you can also use it if your post is just talking about someone/their product. You tag people when you post the picture/video. See pic below.

Mentions can be used for the same reasons but they are added differently. You add them in the captions or to your story using the "@" before the account that you want to mention.

How Is All Of This Different From Hashtags?

Hashtags serve a completely different purpose on IG. Hashtags are for searchability. They help your posts to be found be people that don't follow you. Tags and mentions are about establishing and building relationships with people on IG. These relationships help your account to grow, especially if they're two-way relationships.

How Do I Get More IG Story Engagement From My Followers?

10/28/2020

When it comes to engagement, there are two things that I've learned:
  • You have to ask for it
  • You have to make it easy

If you're not getting much story engagement, it's probably because you're not doing one (or both) of these. Check out this post to learn how to make engagement easy for your followers.

How Do I Engage & "Help" Other People's Content On Instagram

Here are a few tips to help you share/promote posts on Instagram. You can use these tips to share posts that promote the auction in general or posts that promote a vendor that you think would be particularly interesting to your audience.

The Basics For IG Feed Posts

There are four main ways to engage with these types of posts on IG: like, comment, share/repost, save. Of all of these, likes are the LEAST valuable. If you really want to help a post, you should do what I call "like +". Like it and then do at least one of the other things (comment, share/repost, save).

  • Comments: Most people know how to do it, but aren't sure what to say. Remember that ideally, you want your comment to start a conversation. So share your opinion, ask a question or leave a meaningful response. If you really can't think of anything else, then just leave some friendly encouragement.

  • Saves: Those are pretty easy to do. Just look for the bookmark icon below the post.

  • Sharing/Reposting: This is a little harder because you need to use another app. There are lots of free options and it only takes a few seconds to use them to repost. I use one called "Repost". Here's the icon...

Why Bother Using A Repost App?

Whenever you share/repost content directly from someone else's account using these apps, it helps the original post to get more exposure plus you give it more exposure by showing it to your followers! If you don't share/repost using an app but simply post your own version of the same picture/video, you give it more reach by showing it to your followers, but it doesn't help the original post to get more reach. See the difference?

The Basics For IG Stories

There are a few ways to engage with stories as well: sticker engagement, quick emoji response, comment, share. If you're not familiar with engaging with stories...

  • Sticker engagement: Respond to polls, quizzes, sliders, etc.

  • Emoji response: Swipe up for quick access to common emojis

  • Comment: There's always a text box at the bottom of the page. Leave a comment.

  • Share: Look for the airplane icon in the bottom right corner.
